A Camrose Resort Casino that has seen contention over its proposed relation to South Edmonton has now been given approval.
The Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission announced the decision on Thursday afternoon adding that the relocation will create jobs and support businesses.
The relocation was initially rejected back in November of 2022, citing that it would have an impact on charities currently supported by Casinos across the City.
The decision now states that the impact on charities will be “minimal.”
The newest application came with modifications and was accepted back in January.
According to an AGLC press release, “AGLC has a key responsibility to be a direct contributor to provincial revenue,” adding ” This relocation will result in significant additional revenue for the Government of Alberta which in turn contributes to the foundational services that Albertans rely on.
The new facility will span 88,000 square-feet, and will boast 498 slot machines, eight poker tables and 25 game tables. Construction is projected between 19 to 24 months to completion.
Projected revenue from the casino is estimated at $19 million dollars in gaming revenue.
Local residents have been vocal about the casino with concerns over traffic congestion along parsons road, the proposed site of the new location.
The City of Edmonton has opposed the Casino’s relocation with concerns over local earnings being affected.
The casinos license will still operate under its existing Camrose license, with revenues going to rural charities including Camrose and St. Albert.
