M.E LaZerte High School in Edmonton is the new home of a mural recognizing iconic city landmarks, local transit and reconciliation.
Several non-profit organizations, including Get on the Bus and Action for Healthy Communities worked with the school to make the mural possible. More than 45 local students painted the mural over the summer. The mural’s emphasis on reconciliation was inspired by the medicine wheel. Homes for belongings, workplaces for mastery, Saskatoon berries for generosity and the bus represents independence.
Sofia Young is the organiser of the event and a longtime advocate of accessible transit for youth. After facing transportation barriers and watching her friends experience the same, Sophia became a public transportation advocate to create more opportunities for youth.
According to Young, transit systems are crucial for youth to access the services they need, as the systems represent the core of the city for people to get around.
