A kayak that tipped on the Athabasca River near Hinton on Saturday, September 28 ended the life of a Hinton man.
The Hinton RCMP and Yellowhead Fire Department responded just before noon, but the 49 year old man was pronounced dead on the scene. Mounties say that according to their investigation, the man was wearing a life jacket and was trying to recover an abandoned canoe when his kayak capsized.
The man’s wife was there and tried to perform first aid, according to the RCMP.
“Unseasonably high-water volumes in the Athabasca River are suspected of being a key factor in this tragic loss,” police stated.
The Athabasca River runs by Hinton and Edson and meets with the McLeod River at Whitecourt.
