Wood Buffalo RCMP are warning the public about a man impersonating a police officer near Fort McMurray.
A sketch of the suspect, who allegedly introduced himself as “Officer Tom” during a traffic stop, has been released.
On September 15, at around 7:30 p.m., a driver of a black Suburban activated blue and red lights to pull over another vehicle. A man dressed in black, without visible police identifiers or a duty belt, exited the Suburban and claimed to be a police officer.
The impersonator demanded that the driver exit their vehicle for a random search. When the driver refused, the suspect insisted on performing a “breathalyzer” test.
The driver again declined to exit the vehicle. The unknown male then presented a roadside screening device, like those used by the RCMP, and instructed the driver to blow into it. The driver complied, but the suspect left the traffic stop before reading the result.
The impersonator was last seen driving away from Fort McMurray on Draper Road.
The suspect was described as bald, wearing black track pants, black sunglasses, and a black external vest.
Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect or any others who may have encountered him. Anyone with information is asked to contact Wood Buffalo RCMP at (780) 788‐4040.
