Provincial Mounties say someone impersonated an RCMP officer near Fort McMurray Sunday night. The citizen who was involved said a black suburban with red-and-blue lights pulled them over on Draper Road.
The imposter wore all black and sunglasses called himself “Officer Tom.” but didn’t have any police identification. When he asked the driver to get out of the vehicle for a random search the driver refused.
The driver was told to leave the vehicle for a “breathalyzer” test. The driver told police the alleged Mountie presented a roadside screening device similar to the one used by RCMP. “Officer Tom” left before reading the result, heading out of Fort McMurray on Draper Road.
RCMP were immediately called, they patrolled the area but could not find the impersonator who was described as a white bald man. His vehicle is believed to have tinted windows and windshield.
RCMP say anyone can request identification from Mounties; an officer’s badge and ID card will show the same number, and the ID card should contain a photo. Officials are reminding the public that if one has further concerns, call the RCMP to verify the identity of the officer when it’s safe to do so.
