The latest movie coming from British Columbia actor/director Darrell Dennis is a heist film starring Indigenous actors Graham Greene, Tricia Helfer and Ashley Callingbull, titled The Salish Heist.
The plot centers around Steve Joe, a member of a crew on his hometown rez, fictional Moquohat Nation. While action is the basis of the film, it brings the issue of returning artifacts to First Nations that were taken and put in museums and other colonial collections.
As Joe grows up to be an archeologist, he and a group of buddies come up with a plan to stop the items from being shipped from the Royal Western Canadian Museum to overseas. The team of burglars made up of supporting cast members similar to “Ocean’s 11” create a plot to get inside the museum and replace the artifacts with fakes.
This distinctly different plotline comes from a First Nations lens that has long been an angle the director takes. Dennis has an extensive history in Canadian show business, starring on the hit TV series “Degrassi”; and as Shania Twain’s slick and wealthy lover in “Shania: A life in Eight Albums” and other projects. The First Nations director credits his success as an actor, writer, and comedian.
The Great Salish Heist opens September 22 at the South Edmonton Cineplex Odion Theatre at 7:00 p.m.
