The federal government has devised a plan to battle the current housing crisis in Alberta and it includes accepting proposals from developers to construct new housing on Crown land in both Edmonton and Calgary.
Calgary-Skyview MP George Chahal spoke at a press conference Wednesday morning related to the government accepting proposals for two parcels of land. One in Edmonton’s Village of Griesbach and the other in Calgary’s Currie neighborhood.
The unveiling is an overture to more public lands that will be released by the feds for future development according to the government.
Edmonton’s Greisbach Village, a developing area that was the former CFB Griesbach military base will see 45 new proposed town homes with at least half being allocated for affordable housing.
In Calgary, Ninety-nine housing units will be built in the Currie Barracks neighborhood with 30 percent being set aside for affordable living.
Chosen developers who will build on this federal land will access it on a long-term leasing agreement at a discounted value.
The Liberal government announced earlier in the week that 56 properties are being framed by the government with intent on building 250,000 homes by 2031.
