The newly built Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack High School officially opened it’s doors today in the southeast side of Edmonton, named after Saddle Lake Cree Nation Elder Francis Whiskeyjack.
Tammy Tchir, principal of Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack High School says she’s excited to have the school opened for students residing in Southeast Edmonton to attend the newly built school that has a post-secondary feel.
Tchir speaks on Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack’s visit to the school, as Whiskeyjack will be part of the school’s community and handing down his wisdom, experience and teachings to the students in future programs.
Tchir adds that 850 students will be attending the Dr Francis Whiskeyjack High School for the grade 10-11 year with grade 12 students to be added in 2025-2026, and how Whiskeyjack’s philosophies and beliefs will be showcased within the school.
Areas throughout the school will be dedicated to Elder Dr Francis Whiskeyjack, along with creating a smudge room and participation from Whiskeyjack on Orange Shirt Day at school.
Tchir wants to build a school culture of inclusiveness safety and respect and where passions can grow within the Dr Francis Whiskeyjack High School.
