Alberta Health Services warned residents to avoid swimming in Pigeon Lake after crews found blue-green algae in it’s water. Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, occurs naturally in hot, calm weather.
The algae looks like grass clippings, fuzz or globs of blue/green muck on top of the water, anyone who lives near Pigeon Lake’s shore should avoid as it can cause skin irritation, rash, sore throat, sore red eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea.
If you or your pets come in contact with the algae AHS recommends you wash immediately.
AHS said water where blooms are not visible can still be used recreationally even while the advisory is in place.
