Today marks a sombre day in Edmonton’s history. It’s been 37 years since Black Friday.
Nearly 30 people were killed on July 31, 1987 when an F-4 tornado ripped through the Edmonton area.
It was also one of the costliest disasters in Canada’s history: 600 injured, 1,700 evacuees, 750 families left homeless and damage estimated at $663.2 million.
After the disaster, Alberta developed the emergency public warning system, which eventually became the Alberta Emergency Alert System that can be transmitted to cellphones, TV and Radio.
