Canada Day is right around the corner taking place on Monday, July 1. There are many events happening in Fort McMurray to celebrate Canada Day including a parade, a free community concert, face painting, bouncy castles, an obstacle course, the Syncrude fireworks and much more.
Roxanne Andras, the Community Services Coordinator for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says the RMWB works with other community partners and organizations to bring Fort McMurray’s Canada Day celebrations to life.
Along with working with MacDonald Island Park, the RMWB partners with the Fort McMurray Heritage Society to have free admission to the park as well as a vendor market.
Canada Day events in Fort McMurray are free of charge, as the RMWB aims to ensure that the public can attend activities without any cost. The only expenses attendees may incur are related to purchasing food, as there will be food trucks from local vendors at MacDonald Island.
The RMWB offers a sensory-friendly parade in addition to the regular parade. The sensory-friendly parade will be on Main Street from 10:15 to 10:30 am. During this parade, floats and participants will turn off their music and sirens to create a sensory-friendly environment.
Roxanne Andras, says the sensory-friendly parade came into effect during the Santa Claus parade because they had recieved feedback from different groups within the municipality expressing interest to have a parade that’s not as loud.
Fort McMurray’s Canada Day Parade is taking place downtown, meaning roads will be closed throughout the downtown core.
Roxanne Andras spoke about the road closures taking place in the downtown core of Fort McMurray.
The parade starts at 10:30 at the corner of Main Street and Franklin Ave. After heading south on Franklin Ave the parade will end at the corner of Riedel Street and Clearwater Drive.
