With the rise of inflation, poverty and food insecurity have worsened across the province of Alberta with a high demand for food hampers from local food banks, and Food Banks Canada announced a D Minus report card rating for the province.
Richard Matern, Director of Food Banks Canada, explains the reasons behind the D Minus grade given to the province of Alberta.
Matern adds that the the province of Alberta needs the Federal Government a ‘Groceries and Essentials Benefit’, for Albertans to better afford their food for their households.
When it comes to interacting with Canadians, Matern says he hears a lot of fear for whats to come with the continued rise of inflation and as the Food Insecurity deepens, with looking towards the Government to implement initiatives and policies for Canadians to get money in their pockets to afford to eat.
Greater consequences are to follow if the poverty rates and food insecurity continues to fall without changes being made adds Matern, with concerns high for families that continue to struggle, which leads to more hospital visits, signs that are immediate action is needed.
