Following the growth of an out-of-control wildfire near Fort McMurray, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo issued an Evacuation Order. This order is in effect for Beacon Hill, Abasand, Prairie Creek, and Grayling Terrace.
At 3pm, The fire was about eight kilometres from the Fort McMurray landfill and 13 kilometres from the intersection of highways 63 and 881.
According to Alberta Wildfire, the fire behavior Monday was not significant, but it has grown closer to Fort McMurray and they anticipate similar conditions and smoke today. The fire is spreading through ground and fine fuels in the former burn area of 2016. The winds today will bring the fire closer to Fort McMurray.
Officials expect the fire to continue moving toward the city until the winds shift.
Director of Emergency Management, Chief Jody Butz spoke to media at a press conference late Tuesday afternoon giving direction to the evacuees.
Sandy Bowman, Mayor of the RMWB attended the press conference and wanted to ensure the safety for their residents and acknowledged this could be a difficult time for anyone who may have dealt with the 2016 wildfires.
