Alberta is leading the rest of Canada when it comes to fatalities related to distracted driving, making up more than 25 percent of driving related deaths in the province.
This, according to a report published by HelloSafe following the collection of statistics acquired through various sources including the Alberta government, Transport Canada, Statistics Canada, along with the Canadian Automobile Association.
According to the stats reported, 76 Albertans died as the result of distracted driving in 2021, which is 30 more than the previous year.
According to HelloSafe, distracted driving is a problem in Canada and accounts for 19.7 percent of traffic fatalities.
A fine of $287 and three demerits is administered in Alberta for a distracted driving infraction.
Distracted driving goes beyond texting and emailing while behind the wheel according to the company.
Other problematic habits include reading, eating or drinking, grooming or watching videos while driving.
According to the report 13,898 fines were handed out in total during 2022 across the province with figures totalling $3,988,726.
“In Canada, distracted driving is the second biggest cause of traffic deaths after speeding,” according to the report.
