According to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, there is no longer a significant risk of ice jams causing flooding along the Clearwater and Athabasca rivers in Fort McMurray and surrounding areas.
“Flooding caused by ice jams is impossible to predict, so we need to be vigilant every spring, but I’m happy to report that we had a relatively smooth river breakup this year,” said Jody Butz, RMWB Director of Emergency Management and Regional Fire Chief. “We sincerely appreciate the efforts of residents to stay informed and personally prepare.”
Several ice runs are still expected to pass through for the next few days. Anyone taking part in activities near rivers should be cautious and keep a safe distance from shorelines. Riverbanks remain dangerous due to fast moving water and the water is very cold.
Crews will be removing equipment and temporary/seasonal flood mitigation to begin cleaning up and reopening areas as soon as possible. Clearwater Drive is expected to be fully reopened before the Victoria Day holiday.
Triple dams will be emptied of water before being inspected and stored for future use. Remaining interim clay berms will remain in place until permanent flood mitigation projects are complete.
