The province is in the early stages of the 2024 wildfire season and this year is shaping up to have more fires than years past.
On Wednesday’s weekly wildfire update provided by the Alberta Government it was highlighted by them telling residents to take action against their property and obey local fire bans. So far in 2024, there have been more than 172 wildfires with 63 active fires burning.
Alberta Wildfire information officer Josee St-Onge says fire risk is very high right now due to the dry and windy conditions across the province.
St-Onge joined the Windspeaker Radio Network and said seeing wildfires in late April and early May is common for Alberta, however the province is seeing more than usual.
With fire risk prominent across the whole province, St-Onge gave some tips for all Albertans to do their part and help prevent further spread of existing fires or creating new ones.
St-Onge says cooler and wet weather is on the horizon for Alberta, but it may not be enough to help deal with them. Keep up to date on all the fires across Alberta by visiting their website.
