With under 100 days to go until Lloydminster plays host to the 2024 Saskatchewan Summer Games, the Border City is gearing up to deliver an incredible seven days of sport, culture, and community.
Lloydminster was originally scheduled to host the 2020 Saskatchewan Summer Games in July of 2020. Due to the pandemic, the Games were initially postponed to the summer of 2021 before they were eventually cancelled over health and safety concerns. As a result, the city was provided first right of refusal to host the Games in 2024.
From July 21st through 27th, upwards of 1,800 athletes, 1,000 local volunteers, and 5,000 visitors will gather in Lloydminster for the weeklong multi-sport event.
There will be competition in 15 sports, including archery, athletics, baseball, basketball, canoe kayak, golf, rugby 7s (female), soccer, softball (female), tennis, triathlon, swimming, Special Olympics swimming, volleyball, and wheelchair basketball.
Mayor Gerald Aalbers said his community is excited to welcome the games to Lloydminster.
“Lloydminster is an incredible, vibrant community with a deep passion for sport, recreation, and event hosting. We’re proud of our world-class sports and recreation facilities, and the opportunity to enhance and upgrade our city’s amenities. We’re thrilled to showcase our city and all we have to offer this July.”
Lloydminster has also twice played host to the Alberta Games: the Winter Games in 1982, and the Summer Games in 1997.
