The Lac La Biche Fire Department and Buffalo Lake Metis Settlements Fire Crew will be gathering together on March 18th to get introduced to the Fire Smart Program to help provide better ways to fire proof their homes within the community.
John Kokotilo, Fire Chief of the Lac La Biche Fire Department spoke with CFWE as he explains how they were approached by Buffalo Lake Metis Settlement’s Fire Department.

Kokotilo speaks on his surprise on the number of residents that live in the surrounding reservations and Metis communities, and adds that with introducing the Fire Smart Program to communities like Buffalo Lake, the homes will have a higher percent chance in surviving a wildfire.

With the dryer winter season within the province of Alberta, Kokotilo says he has never seen a dry season like this in his 40 year career, and urges many within the communities to be carful to prevent wildfires.
