The Rideau Hall Foundation confirmed University of Blue Quills as one of the recipients to receive funding from the RHF Teachers Education Initiative.
The Program will see 13.2 million dollars going towards enriching Canada’s education system with 10,000 Indigenous teachers.
Other recipients include Gabriel Dumont Institute (SK); Seven Generations Education Institute (ON); Mi’kmaq Wolastoqey Centre – University of New Brunswick (NB); University College of the North (MB); McGill University (QC), and Yukon University, Yukon First Nation Education Directorate, and First Nation School Board.
CFWE spoke with Rachel Mishenene, Director for the Indigenous Teacher Education Initiative at the Rideau Hall Foundation about the gratitude and excitement of granting funding towards UNBQ.
Mishenene says it was humbling and powerful to speak with the University of Blue Quills as she knows the funding has impacted their programs in a positive way.
Sherri Chisan, president of the University of Blue Quills says it’s all about reclaiming themselves and nation building, and a way of being within the classrooms with the help from the funding from Rideau Hall Foundation.
Chisan says new curriculum and teacher training courses will be made from the funding, along with equipping language teachings to carry over towards the students attending UNBQ.
