Thousands of youth from Alberta have gathered in Treaty 8 territory for the 2024 Alberta Winter Games.
From swimming to alpine skiing, athletes and viewers alike will be able to take part and watch more than 15 different sports across the Grande Prairie region.
On Friday night, the opening ceremonies kicked off at the Bonnetts Energy Centre with opening remarks from the Mayor of Grande Prairie, Jackie Clayton.
Warren Nekurak, Indigenous Relations advisor for the City of Grande Prairie was in charge of setting up the cultural side of the opening ceremonies with performances from the Red Elk Singers and a hoop dance from Clinton Soto.
Nekurark spoke with the Windspeaker Radio Network to discuss the importance of representing Treaties 6, 7 and 8 during the games.
