After a vote at the end of 2022, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo councilors voted in favor of eliminating Fort McMurray’s Mobile photo radar program once the contract ended in 2023.
The city recognized the program did not solve the ongoing speeding problem within the community. City council will now conduct new strategies to eliminate excessive speeding.
According to the RMWB, In 2022, photo radar generated close to $2 million dollars in revenue.
City council has approved funding for six new RCMP officers and four bylaw officers, in addition to increasing patrols in school and playground zones.
The Alberta government has started a one-year review with 26 municipalities on possibly removing photo radar at 2,387 camera sites that the province believes are used only for revenue. The province has taken down photo radar on Calgary’s 101-kilometre long Stoney Trail and on Edmonton’s 78-km Anthony Henday Drive.
