Effective today at noon, Jan. 5, the load limit for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is increasing to 15,000 kg.
Vehicles heavier than 15,000 kg must stay off the winter road until load limits are increased. Heavier vehicles could damage the road, causing serious safety hazards and delays in reaching higher load limits.
Road users should be aware that the load limit increase means there will be large fuel trucks using the road.
Crews continue to work on the winter road and load limits are expected to increase as ice thickens. There are a number of contributing factors to ice thickness, such as water levels in surrounding lakes and rivers, the waterbed, turbulence, human disruption and weather conditions.
All changes to the load limit for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road will be formally announced.
