Wood Buffalo RCMP is investigating a fire at a church in Janvier.
On Friday, December 15th, at around 10:30 p.m., police responded to a call about a building on fire in the community situated 120 kilometers south of Fort McMurray near the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation.
When the RCMP arrived, they found the Church engulfed in flames. The fire was extinguished but the church was ultimately destroyed.
According to witnesses, a silver-colored sedan was seen leaving the vicinity around the time the fire began.
Bishop Gary Franken of the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. Paul says the church that burned in Janvier was the unused “old” church, which was right beside the new church that has been in use for a number of years. Franken says the new church was not damaged.
Coun. Shane Janvier of the Chipewyan Prairie Dene First Nation condemned the destruction in a video on Facebook
The incident comes after Barrhead RCMP said they are investigating a string of arson fires that severely damaged two of the town’s churches earlier this month.
The RCMP is asking anyone with information or dash camera footage of the incidents to contact the detachment or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www. P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store
