Amarjeet Sohi, Mayor of Edmonton
The Government of Canada is investing 4.2 million dollars to prevent gang violence and gun crime in Edmonton.
The funding will support youth at risk or currently involved in gangs, as well as determine the causes of crime.
Crime prevention and intervention initiatives are critical to creating pathways away from violence for young Edmontonians, said City of Edmonton’s Mayor, Amarjeet Sohi.
The funding comes as tensions around gang and violent crime runs high in the city.
In November, an 11 year old boy was killed alongside his father in a targeted shooting.
On Dec. 2, West Edmonton Mall was put on lockdown following reports of a man with a gun inside the mall. No shots were fired and charges are still pending against the suspect.
So far Edmonton Police Service or the Alberta government have not commented on the funding.
