The Government of Alberta is taking action to address EMS concerns provincewide with a new advisory committee.
As part of the Governments focus to re-tool Alberta’s health care system, the Government is introducing initiatives aimed at making sure EMS operates at a efficient and effective level.
Currently, Alberta has a centralized dispatch model, having their call-centre based in a central location. In response to municipalities’ concerns, the province commissioned an independent EMS review. It concluded that Alberta’s central dispatch model follows world-leading practices and design used in high-performing Canadian and global jurisdictions.
The review outlined many opportunities for improvement, including recommendations to work more closely with municipalities and EMS partners, and Alberta’s government accepted all the recommendations.
The new Alberta EMS standing committee will have paramedics and EMS partners on the ground and have a direct line of sight and understand the unique needs of their communities. The province is inviting these members to join the three year term committee.
The 2023 budget provides $211M in new EMS funding across three years allocated for new staff, more ambulances and new EMS vehicles.
