The Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters are reporting a rise in domestic violence cases within the province.
The report titled “On the Front Lines” has been compiling data from April 2022 to March 2023 for multiple organizations and shelters in Alberta. The report indicates there were more than 59,000 calls for help answered by the shelters, a number they haven’t seen in ten years.
The data also shows a ten year increased in strangulation and forced sexual actions, which increases the risk of being killed by 750 per cent. In addition to the numbers provided, about 8,400 people, an increase of 19 per cent, received help at shelters and almost half of those people were children.
