Edmonton’s Misericordia hospital will open a new Emergency Department at 7:30 Tuesday morning. The $85M project began back in 2020.
The hospital has seen 50,000-55,000 ER visits each year which is double what the existing department could handle. The new department is built to handle 60,000 visits per year.
The old department was 1,700 square meter’s, the new layout is now 5,000 square meter’s. The hospital will gain two ambulance bays, six acute care spaces, 38 treatment spaces, four private rooms and more.
At this time, no more staff will work in the new department than the old department, the new facility won’t relieve pressure on Alberta’s hospital system.
The original emergency department was built in 1969 and made to accommodate 25,000 patients annually.
