Lac La Biche’s Portage College Campus hosted their annual Métis flag raising ceremony in remembrance of the historic sit in of Métis and First Nations people that helped keep the college doors open back in 1968 after appearing in front of parliament.
CFWE spoke with Robert Rayko, community and cultural facilitator for Portage College about the Métis Flag raising on campus, and emphasizes on the importance of honoring those who fought to have a college within Lac La Biche.
Rayko hopes that students that are currently enrolled in Portage College realize the history behind the college is important, and an example for Métis and First Nations students that if you set your mind to something, you can be successful.
