The Edmonton Police Service has arrested and charged a 20-year-old man following a drive-by shooting in the southeast Edmonton neighborhood of Laurel last week.
At approximately 10:54 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, the EPS Gang Suppression Team was conducting a follow up investigation in the Laurel neighborhood, when an officer observed a white SUV slowly drive-by a residence near Mabuhay Park and fire multiple gunshots at homes in the area which were occupied by families, including children. The officer immediately activated their emergency lights and followed the vehicle as it drove at a high rate of speed throughout the neighbourhood trying to evade police. EPS Air 1, Tactical Unit and other police resources responded to the area to assist.
The SUV eventually stopped in the area of 30 Street and 15 Avenue. As police approached, a male suspect stepped out of the passenger side of the SUV and pointed a firearm at the officer who was in his vehicle at the time. The SUV then fled the scene, and the suspect fled the area on foot. With the assistance of Air 1 and Tactical, the male was arrested moments later. A handgun was located nearby with the serial number defaced.
Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident, and investigators believe the shooting was targeted. Police continue to search for the SUV and its occupant(s).
Parminder Singh, 20, has since been charged with pointing a firearm, careless use of a firearm, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a vehicle, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, recklessly discharging a firearm, tampering with a serial number, mischief and failure to comply with an order. The accused has since been released with several conditions, including to not possess any firearms.
