Demolition work has begun on the Exhibition Lands in central Edmonton.
Over time, each building will be knocked down for the future of the former Northlands area.
Step one of the process has started, with the main stables at the horse racing track. The long process is removing all the structures that are no longer in use.
Three years ago, Edmonton city council announced that the area of former Northlands Coliseum would be redeveloped into residential, retail, recreational spaces and two urban plazas beside two LRT stations.
The biggest step in the demolition will be the Coliseum, which will happen sometime next year.
The City of Edmonton is responsible for the costs of the demolition, unlike Calgary, where the province has agreed to pay to tear down the Saddledome.
The first stage of demolitions is scheduled to go through December, and the other structures on the grounds will be taking place over the next two years.
