Youth experiencing or at risk of homelessness gathered at the Boyle Street Community Plaza for a helping hand at the annual YEG Youth Connect.
The one day event in October welcomes youth between the ages of 13 to 29 with haircuts, free measl, live music, clothing and agencies to find stable housing, employment and health services.
Andrea Kocken, Youth Diversion Supervisor at the YMCA of Northern Alberta and says this event has been helping youth at risk of homelessness for nearly a decade in the city.
The youth involved in the event do a survey afterwards to see what they can add to make this more welcome and what services would be beneficial in future events.
When asked about what she would tell any youth who’s worried about showing up to the event, Kocken mentioned the groups willingness and main goal of making everyone feel safe and welcome.
YEG Youth Connect is a grass roots committee and encourages year round donations for clothing and money to provide this yearly event. Details on how you can show your support can be found on their website.
