Manitoba made Canadian history last night electing a government headed by a First Nations member on Tuesday.
Wab Kinew (Anishinaabe) will lead the New Democratic Party, winning a majority of seats in the provincial legislature and would form a government.
The 41 year old will be Manitoba’s first Indigenous leader in 145 years. The province had a premier of Metis heritage in the 1800’s.
“I was given a second chance in life,” Kinew said during his speech, in reference to some of the mistakes he made in his past life. “And I would like to think that I have made good on that opportunity.”
