Last year, the Windspeaker Radio Network and Edmonton Elks made history by broadcasting the first ever CFL game in the Cree language.
This year, history will once again be made as CFWE & CJWE radio will broadcast the CFL Labor Day rematch between the Edmonton Elks and Calgary Stampeders in both Cree and Blackfoot.
The Saturday afternoon matchup will feature Wayne Jackson providing Cree and Butch Wolfleg, providing the Blackfoot portion.
The elder from Siksika Nation has done Blackfoot broadcasts with CJWE and the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen in years past, and when asked about the football game, Wolfleg say’s that Treaty 7 territory will be ecstatic to hear the Blackfoot language on during the broadcast.
Wayne Jackson is also no stranger to sports broadcasting, making history last year with the CFL Cree broadcast and the Edmonton Stingers nêhiyawêwin broadcast. Jackson says this year he’s coming into this game with much more research.
CEO & Founder of Windspeaker Media Bert Crowfoot say’s this will be an exciting and historic broadcast as it will allow the Cree & Blackfoot languages to be heard on an entire network to football fans across Alberta
Kickoff is at 5pm from Commonwealth Stadium. You can listen across Alberta on FM Frequencies or online at cfweradio.ca (Northern) or cjwe.ca (Southern Alberta)
