The CFL’s Player’s Association says Occupational Health and Safety in Alberta is investigating the CFL’s decision to play the Labor Day Classic between the Edmonton Elks and Calgary Stampeders despite smoky conditions in Calgary.
The Stamps erased a 15 point deficit to defeat the Elks 35-31. The game was played despite Environment Canada’s Air Quality Health Index for Calgary measuring between 8 and 10.
Since 2019, the CFLPA and CFL have a policy indicating on field activities are to either be cancelled or ceased when the Index surpasses 7.
The CFLPA says they informed the league twice in writing before the opening kickoff and afterwards stating the game shouldn’t be played due to conditions.
Poor air quality has resulted in a number of CFL teams moving their practice to indoor facilities.
The union and league are scheduled to meet on Thursday in Vancouver. It was scheduled before Monday’s game but the issue has jumped to top priority.
