The old footbridge to West Edmonton Mall was demolished in July 2018 due to safety concerns, and there’s now a new pedestrian bridge over 170th Street.
It opened on Friday, and is a shared-use bridge between 87 and 90 avenue.
It connects the Misericordia Hospital and West Meadowlark Park neighbourhood, with West Edmonton Mall and their transit centre.
Backn in 2018, the mall tore down the bridge, and was initially planned to be refurbished, but an assessment determined doing so would be far more expensive than replacing the bridge altogether.
Edmonton issued a demolition permit on “an emergency basis,” but there was disagreement over who would pay to replace the bridge.
The $10.4-million project was completed on budget, the city said Friday, with support from Alberta Health Services.
