RMWB wants feedback for Anzac Church Memorial

The Regional Municiplaity of Wood Buffalo is looking for feedback on the planned Anzac Church Memorial south of Fort McMurray.

The Anzac Church Memorial commemorates the Willow Lake Church in the Anzac area. It was demolished in 2016 because its aging structure was deemed unsafe. Pews, stained-glass panes, a glass cross, a pump organ, a bell and a wooden plaque were saved. The church was used by multiple different faiths and its former location is undeveloped.

The church itself was given to the community after the closure of Stoney Mountain Station in 1964. The station was a sector control station for the Royal Canadian Air Force when it opened in 1957. One of two churches at the station was given to the community.

The memorial is planned for the gazebo park at the corner of Cheecham Drive and Stony Mountain Road. The lot of the former church is now a park with a gazebo, garden boxes, picnic tables, benches, lighting, flag poles, walkways and parking. The footprint of the former church is empty.
