One person is dead and another in hospital after a small plane crashed into a lake Friday evening, 60 kilometres northeast of the Town of Tofield.
RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney said the plane was on a training flight out of Cooking Lake Airport and was reported overdue around 9 p.m.
Search and rescue crews found the aircraft in Beaverhill Lake just after midnight, about 200 metres off the lake’s northwest shore.
Crews extracted both occupants from the cockpit, one of whom was declared dead at the scene. The other was transported to a hospital in Edmonton by STARS air ambulance.
RCMP did not say whether it was the flight instructor or student who was killed.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the crash.
