The Edmonton Elks are the latest CFL team to add a Indigenous logo to their uniform.
Created by Artist Conrad Plews, the logo was inspired by Izaiah Masuskapoe’s 2021 Elks logo design.
Masuskapoe was an Indigenous student at West Edmonton’s St. Thomas More Catholic Junior High School at the time of his creation and submitted his take on the Elks logo after being inspired by the B.C. Lions logo created by Kwakwaka’wakw/Tlingit artist Corrine Hunt.
“The design is largely based on the existing Elks logo, as well as the design created by Izaiah,” said Plews, who owns a tattoo studio in Edmonton. “I wanted to integrate both designs while infusing a feeling of dynamic energy and strength.”
On August 10, Players will wear the new helmet when the Elks host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for Indigenous Celebration night at Commonwealth Stadium.
Select merchandise will also be available for purchase at the Elks Team Store, with net proceeds from sales going to Indigenous Sport Council Alberta.
Also on Indigenous Night, watch for 89.3 the Raven broadcasting live from Commonwealth Stadium at Fan Fest.
