The Canada Revenue Agency will be issuing the long-promised “grocery rebate” payments to eligible Canadians on July 5.
The one time rebate is set to roll out to approximately 11 million low and modest-income Canadians.
Amounts those eligible can expect to see, is calculated based on each family’s situation and adjusted family net income.
For example, if you are single you could receive a maximum payment of:
- $234 if you have no children
- $387 if you have one child
- $467 if you have two children
- $548 if you have three children
- $628 if you have four children
And, if you are married or have a common-law partner, you could receive up to:
- $306 if you have no children
- $387 if you have one child
- $467 if you have two children
- $548 if you have three children
- $628 if you have four children
The grocery rebate won’t arrive as a separate deposit in your bank account. Instead, it’ll be integrated with the regular GST/HST credit scheduled for July 5, says the CRA.
The plan was not well-received by Canadians when it was first announced. Many slammed the so called “grocery Rebate” calling it a “band-aid solution” that doesn’t address the real issues.
In some Canadian cities, food banks have been forced to offer less to each person in order to meet demand.
New Canadians and working, lower-middle class people are among those now lining up for food hampers.
A recent survey from Food Banks Canada found that Alberta saw a 34 per cent jump in people needing services compared to the year before. Edmonton food bank officials say their client numbers have doubled and that doesn’t include demand from other charities.
The Edmonton food bank helps nearly 35 thousand people each month, not counting community groups and school requests for hampers.
Between January and March of this year, the Calgary Food Bank saw an 18 per cent increase in demand for hampers compared to the previous year, with the agency booking nearly 500 emergency food hampers a day.

This is good
Does the government think that miserable amount can help with the obscene costs of foods??? People like me, a senior, are eating poorly, in detriment of our already castigated health by age. WE NEED REAL HELP TO EAT DECENTLY‼️‼️‼️
I completely agree with you. This one time payment will not be enough to make any great difference.
Hi
I don’t know how true this is but I have 3 children . I live separate . I am on OW. My children if they need something they will come to me instead of their dad bec of so many reason .
How does the government think this tiny amount of money is going to help me with food for the year? This is a joke! I am a disabled senior and am barely scraping by as it is. This one time payment will not feed me for the entire year. The cost of living has skyrocketed and is only getting worse with each day that goes by. Maybe adjusting the pensions to go along with the cost of living would be a much better idea.
This is a wonderful program however, is it targeting the right people, I was hoping it would support more single seniors as I am not convinced that our government is reaching out to them as much as they reach out to new Canadians. After all it has been the seniors that have worked and put this country together.
I am in a community that deals with a great number of immigrants who are not working and need help but the help should planed better to assist them in getting them more education and jobs.
Thank you for hearing my comment. Respectfully Judy Shanks
There are so many families out there trying to make ends meet,it will take alot more as the rich are getting richer and the poor ….well….they need assistance as if wages go up what gòd dose it do because so dose everthing else….Right?
I am on a disability plan and I don’t receive to much a month
This rebate is a coverup to shut us up. Because we are Senior’s we are just over your pathetic line of income. We can barely afford fruits and vegetables. Come to Canada…..free money
It’s, hurting all people, including single people yet another rebate that people don’t qualify for. Anyway, where does the government get off saying that’s its their money their giving. It’s our money we are dispersing to cover up this fiascle. What a crock
I hear so many people complain about this rebate saying that it is not enough, it’s not enough. Well I am grateful for any little bit of help I can get. Due to APS and Lupus and 4 strokes, I have been on disability since I was 37 years old. How many of the people complaining about how the Govt. and this inefficient rebate plan are going to be returning those cheques to Ottawa?
Yup, that’s what I thought. I could complain about how I am not eating the proper foods for my health like everyone else is too but what will that get me, nothing at all. So I will accept what extras they can scrape up, pray for sunnier weather so to speak, and hope someone somewhere is listening.
Have a good day everyone.
I’m appreciative for what we got today, but it is not enough to buy my food for the rest of the year. Being a senior we still can’t buy the better foods like meat and vegetables and fruits. So what do we done after this month?? Seniors need more money to live on.
There’s what about 40 million people in Canada. The government is handing out money to 11 million people. We are all out here trying to make a living and pay our bills. I know I’m not rich I have a lot of expenses. I’m working two jobs and supporting 4 of us. And I will not receive any money from the government.
Wondering how come I didn’t receive this grocery rebate?
I haven’t received anything
I pay my taxes. I sent in my tax return and because of the strike they assessed my return late and charged me almost $60 for a late filing fee. I was born and raised in Canada.
