On May 30th, hundreds of community members of the Fort Chipewyan area were forced to evacuate from their homes due to the fast rapid growth of the wildfire.
Windspeaker Radio Network spoke with Emily Smith, Wildfire information officer from Alberta Forestry, as she says that the wildfire situation with Fort Chipewyan is deemed out of control, with over 60 percent of the fire contained from growth and hopes of the fire not affecting any communities.
Smith says over 188 crew members are currently fighting the fire, alongside members from the United States and Australia to aid in the efforts to stop the spread of the wildfire.
Smith goes on to say that over the last few days, the area received over 41 mills of rain, which aided in stopping the fire growth and limited extreme fire behavior.
Residents of the Fort Chipewyan area will have to wait to return home, as smith says that safety criteria needs to be met in order for residents to return home.
