The 2023 provincial election has come to an end and as the ballots have been counted. Premier Danielle Smith and her UCP government came on top over Rachel Notley’s NDP with 49 of the 87 seats of the Alberta Legislator, giving the UCP a majority government once again. However, the NDP did increase their seats from 24 seats to 38.
The UCP dominating the rural ridings in the province apart from Banff-Kananaskis switching hands from UCP Maranda Rosin to NDP Sarah Elmeligi with only 200 more votes. NDP did make ground in major urban centers like Calgary and the complete domination of Edmonton adding 14 more seats to the NDP’s caucus.
Notley in her speech congratulated Smith in her victory but also took blame for the lose her party for the party’s attempted to regain office in Alberta. It is unclear if the Notley will step down as party leader after this second lost for the top job in Alberta.
In her speech Notley, made the promise to be a tough opposition for the UCP government.
Premier Smith acknowledged Notley in her victory speech in the Ridding of Brooks-Medicine Hat saying, “Rachel Notley is loyal Albertian who love’s this province as much as I or anyone else… She is deserving of respect and gratitude.”.
Smith responded to Notley’s call to represent all Albertans in her victory speech.
Smith continued by addressing the many Albertans who didn’t not vote for her party and promised that she will serve all Albertans regardless on how they voted. Smith also made the promise that her government will challenge the Federal Liberals Government current bills that will affect Alberta’s energy sector.
The popular vote was 44 percent for the NDP and 52 percent for the UCP. Meanwhile the third and fourth of the places for the popular vote went to the Alberta Party with 0.72 percent and Independent Candidates with a nice 0.69 percent.
