Family members of a woman and her 11-year-old daughter who were stabbed and killed in Edmonton, have gathered with flowers and photos at a park near the scene of the attack.
Police have said it happened around suppertime Friday outside Crawford Plains Elementary School in the city’s southeast.
EPS said the 35-year-old woman was dead at the scene and the child later died in hospital.
Police say two officers responded and shot a man matching a description of the suspect after an altercation.
The man was in hospital in critical condition and Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating the shooting.
Investigators have confirmed the deceased are mother and child; however, it is not clear whether the assailant was known to them. Crawford Plains School in Mill Woods serves children from kindergarten to Grade 6.
Autopsies have been tentatively scheduled for Monday, May 8, and Tuesday, May 9.
A vigil for the victims was held at the Crawford Plains School Saturday afternoon.
People lit candles, laid flowers & toys down and tied red ribbons and feathers to the posts of a teepee at the park.
Edmonton Public Schools representative said a Critical Incident Support Services team will be providing counselling and support at the school on Monday when classes resume.
