There is a Fire Ban in effect for most of the Wood Buffalo Region including Fort McMurray.
The Fire Ban includes the urban service area of Fort McMurray and is being implemented as part of the provincial fire ban enacted within the Forest Protection Area by Alberta Wildfire.
All fire permits are suspended or cancelled and no new fire permits will be issued. The fire ban applies to fires throughout the entire region, including:
- Outside fires of any type, including:
- Open-air fires
- Recreational fires contained within a portable or fixed fire pit (including backyard fire pits)
- Charcoal barbeques
- Fireworks
If emergency fire response is required, the person responsible for the fire can be charged the full firefighting costs.
The fire ban also applies to fires outside of the Urban Service Area of Fort McMurray, including:
- Fort McKay
- Draper
- Saprae Creek
- Gregoire Lake Estates
- Anzac
- Janvier
- Conklin
The forested area north of Lake Athabasca, including Fort Chipewyan remains under a Fire Advisory.
