With the snow melting and schools entering their final months, the Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival of the Arts will be starting on June 1st, alongside international performers.
Canada’s Indigenous community will be making an appearance along side them. Organizer Caitlin North spoke with Windspeaker Radio Network, about having Indigenous voices represented at the festival.
Making a first-time appearance to the festival is local artist Lance Cardinal, known for designing the Edmonton Oilers Indigenous Logo and YouTube teachings of Indigenous culture through crafts.
During the festival, Cardinal will be teaching the importance of ribbon skirts through an interactive craft.
Ribbon skirts mean something different to each wearer and culture. For many Indigenous women, they are symbols of resilience, survival and identity.
Others use the skirts as signs of reclaiming their identity and showing that they are proud of it.
Other activities during the festival will feature a South Korean Brush Theatre group preforming Doodle Pop, where the audience is taken on a journey through non-verbal communication.
