Days before the child’s remains were found on the Samson Cree Nation, police arrested the 27-year-old woman on charges of first-degree murder and indignity to a body.
An autopsy determined the child had been killed, dying of blunt impact injuries.
Those previously charged in the killing also include a 25-year-old man charged with accessory to murder and indignity to a dead body, as well as Edward Nievera, 67, charged with accessory to murder and indignity to a dead body.
According to court documents, Nievera is accused of helping the 27-year-old woman “escape” an undisclosed situation or place on April 22 and 23 while knowing the killing had occurred. He is also accused of moving the body in a hockey bag to an unknown location.
The names of the woman and 25-year-old man charged in the case continue to be withheld by homicide detectives to protect the identity of other children related to the young victim; a publication ban is in place to protect her identity.
On Friday, police in a news release said they have now arrested two additional men in connection with the killing.
