The grocery shelves have been stocked in preparation for thousands of people set to return back to Yellowknife on Wednesday.
Lifting the order remains contingent on fire and road conditions, but NWT wildfire information officer Mike Westwick said Highway 1 should be smooth sailing.
More than 20,000 Yellowknife residents and those on nearby First Nation communities of Ndilo and Dettah were evacuated on August 16th. Just days earlier, residents of Hay River and Fort Smith were ordered out and they remain evacuated.
The territory has been preparing for an influx of traffic on Highway 1 to Yellowknife, more than 2,000 people have registered for re-entry flights.
Residents returning have been warned to be “self-reliant” for 72 hours upon their return.
