The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) is recommending that drivers take time to check their vehicles and prepare roadside emergency kits before winter arrives, bringing challenging driving conditions.
To enhance safety, the AMA advises keeping fuel tanks at least half full. Cold weather can reduce fuel efficiency, and having extra fuel can help prevent running low during unexpected delays.
Winter tires are also crucial for driving in snow and ice, as they provide better traction and control compared to all-season tires. This significantly improves a driver’s ability to steer and stop effectively in winter conditions. It’s important to regularly check tire pressure, as it can drop when temperatures fall.
In addition to vehicle preparation, drivers should be ready in case their vehicle breaks down or becomes stranded. This includes dressing in warm layers and keeping extra winter clothing and blankets in the vehicle. A fully charged cellphone, along with an extra phone charger, is essential for contacting roadside assistance when needed.
The AMA recommends keeping a winter emergency kit in the vehicle with supplies such as:
- Booster cables
- Extra winter clothing and blankets
- A flashlight with extra batteries
- Non-perishable food, such as protein bars
- Candles and matches
- A reflective vest
- Multi-purpose tools
- An extra cellphone charger
- A fire extinguisher
- Emergency phone numbers
- Road cones
- First-aid supplies
