More details about the province’s new solar panel recycling program are being shared today, ahead of the programs start date on October 1st. This change will also be accompanied by the banning of solar panels in Albertan landfills.
The fee to recycle will be $15, and will only apply to new panels supplied on or after Oct. 1, meaning no retroactive fees on already installed panels.
For example, for a typical house with 20 panels, the cost would be $240, less than 2% of the total cost for installation.
The province also said Thursday that the fee is for funding the collection, transportation and recycling of legacy and newly supplied panels.
This program is the first of it’s kind in Canada. Most solar panels have a 25 year life span, meaning nearly all panels currently in service in Alberta will need to be replaced by 2045, according to the province.
