Alberta is launching a new information hub and a series of public town halls as the province moves forward with plans to build large-scale artificial intelligence data centres.
A provincewide virtual town hall is happening August 27 from 6 to 7 p.m., hosted by Premier Danielle Smith and Technology and Innovation Minister Nate Glubish.
In-person sessions are also planned for Ponoka on August 19, Sturgeon County on August 20 and Grande Prairie on September 11.
The province says the sessions will give Albertans more information about data-centre development and opportunities to have their say.
The government says its approach is based on four commitments: Albertans won’t pay for the projects, the electricity grid will take priority, water use will be tightly controlled, and communities will benefit financially through taxes, royalties and a levy on data-centre equipment.
Alberta says its strategy has already attracted between $100 and $200 billion in potential private investment, including Meta’s more than $13-billion data centre in Sturgeon County, which is now under construction.
