Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says her government will work with Indigenous communities on a proposed new pipeline to British Columbia’s coast, despite ongoing tensions over Alberta’s sovereignty debate.
The commitment comes as Smith’s government remains in a legal dispute with First Nations over it’s duty to consult on legislation toed to a possible referendum on Alberta separating from Canada.
On Thursday, Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans to pursue a new pipeline alongside an existing route to B.C’s coast, with the goal of increasing oil exports to Asian markets.
